Serghei Mangul

Dr. Serghei Mangul is an Associate Professor and the incoming Director of the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) at Jagiellonian University. He specializes in designing and applying novel data-driven computational approaches to accelerate the integration of omics and biomedical data into translational research and education. Previously, Dr. Mangul served as an Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics at the University of Southern California and as the Director of Challenges and Benchmarking at Sage Bionetworks. His work is dedicated to advancing the principles of reproducibility, data reuse, and long-term sustainability—efforts recognized by the ISCB Honorable Mention Award for Sustainability. As a member of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Board of Regents Working Group on the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) Strategic Transformation, he is committed to accelerating scientific breakthroughs through data reuse. Dr. Mangul earned his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from Georgia State University and holds a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Moldova State University. He completed his postdoctoral training in computational genomics at UCLA under Prof. Eskin. Beyond his research, he is a dedicated mentor, having served the NIH AIM-AHEAD Leadership Fellowship and the NCATS Training Program in Advanced Data Analysis. Dr. Mangul is the recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER and Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards.
