Head of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

Prof. Dr. Roman A. Volkov is the Head of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from Chernivtsi University. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted research in Austria and Germany, including appointments at the University of Vienna and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Gatersleben. He subsequently continued his academic career at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, first as an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellow and later as a research scientist, where he completed his habilitation in Genetics. His research focuses on the molecular organization and evolution of ribosomal DNA, with particular emphasis on structural rearrangements, differential rDNA expression in plant hybrids and polyploids, and nucleolar dominance. Another important area of his work is the development and application of molecular markers for biodiversity assessment, DNA barcoding, and conservation monitoring. His laboratory currently conducts DNA barcoding and monitoring of rare and invasive plant species in Europe, as well as genetic conservation studies of Ukrainian honey bee populations.
