Marcin Surmiak
CDT - CARD UJCM
Marcin Surmiak (PhD, DSc) is a researcher in the Division of Molecular Biology and Clinical Genetics at the II Department of Internal Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College (UJMC).
He has completed several international research internships at leading academic institutions, including the National Health Institute Dr Ricardo Jorge in Portugal, Monash University in Australia, the Yale School of Medicine at Yale University in the USA, and the University of Bern in Switzerland.
He is currently Head of the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Cell Imaging (LABiK) at the Centre for the Development of Therapies for Civilisation and Age-Related Diseases.
His research primarily focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation, particularly with regard to neutrophils, extracellular vesicles, autophagy and imaging-based studies in disease models. He combines cutting-edge imaging techniques with systems-level analyses, such as transcriptomic and lipidomic profiling, to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, including ANCA-associated vasculitis, and to identify novel therapeutic targets.
