IMol Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw

Karolina Szczepanowska graduated from the University of Wroclaw and earned her Ph.D. at the University of Louvain, where she studied the mechanisms ensuring the fidelity of mitochondrial genome replication. She continued her research in Prof. Trifunovic’s lab at the University of Cologne and CECAD Research Centre, focusing on proteolytic regulation of mitochondrial function. There, she discovered a salvage pathway that safeguards the molecular machinery responsible for energy production. Since 2021, Karolina has led a research group at the IMol Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, investigating how cells adapt to defects in mitochondrial respiratory complexes.
