Grzegorz Sumara
Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS
Grzegorz Sumara is an Associate Professor and Head of the Dioscuri Centre for Metabolic Diseases at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS in Warsaw. His research focuses on signaling pathways regulating metabolism in adipocytes, enterocytes, and other cell types, with emphasis on kinase‑ and ubiquitin‑dependent mechanisms relevant to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
He earned his MSc from the Jagiellonian University and his PhD from the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, followed by postdoctoral training at Columbia University and the IGBMC in Strasbourg. From 2013 to 2021, he led a research group at the Rudolf Virchow Center in Würzburg before becoming a laureate of the Dioscuri Programme and establishing his laboratory in Warsaw in 2020.
Dr. Sumara has published in leading journals, including Cell, Cell Metabolism, Genes & Development, Science, EMBO Journal, and EMBO Mol. Med. His team integrates mouse genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and multi‑omics approaches to investigate signaling modules controlling lipid absorption, lipolysis, and inter‑organ metabolic communication.
