Elżbieta Jagielska

Mossakowski Medical Research Institute Polish Academy of Sciences

Dr. Jagielska, a specialist in molecular biology, protein engineering, and biotechnology, for more than a decade, her research has focused on the development of novel non-antibiotic antibacterial agents known as enzybiotics. Her scientific work concentrates on the engineering of bacteriolytic enzymes, namely peptidoglycan hydrolases, which modulate bacterial cell wall structure through controlled digestion. By combining knowledge of enzyme structure, specificity, and mechanisms of action, Dr. Jagielska transforms these enzymes into effective enzybiotics. Using bactericidal activity assays performed under conditions closely resembling real-life environments, she develops prototypes of antibacterial products with potential applications in medicine, veterinary science, the food industry, and aquaculture. Enzybiotics are capable of eliminating antibiotic-resistant bacteria as well as bacterial biofilms.

Dr. Jagielska has participated in numerous applied research projects founded by  National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR),  the Foundation for Polish Science and most recently Medical Research Agency.

She is also actively engaged in science communication and outreach, delivering lectures, workshops, and presentations for young people, students, and senior audiences. In these activities, she discusses the growing threat of antibiotic resistance and presents modern approaches to combating bacterial infections.
