Evangelos Topakas is a Professor of Industrial Biotechnology and Director of Biotechnology Laboratory at the School of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), leading the Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis group (IndBioCat). His research focuses on the discovery and engineering of industrial enzymes, the valorization of residual biomass for second-generation biofuels and high-value bioproducts, and the bioconversion and upcycling of synthetic polymers to address plastic pollution. His expertise spans Biorefineries, Enzyme Catalysis, Microbial Biotechnology, and Protein Engineering, with applications in energy, chemicals, and sustainable materials. 

He has co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters, coordinated or participated in different national and European research projects, and is highly cited internationally. Prof. Topakas also serves the scientific community through key editorial roles: Editor-in-Chief of Biotechnology for the Environment (Springer Nature), Section Editor for Catalysts (MDPI), and Associate Editor for Biotechnology for Biofuels (Springer Nature) and Frontiers journals.
